Glasgow Barrowlands

Famous for its energetic crowds and for playing host to some legendary gigs, the Glasgow Barrowlands is one of the city's favourite music venues.

The venue dates back to the 1930s with the creation of the Glasgow Barrowland Market, more affectionately known as the "Barras". The ballroom was built above the enclosed market and traditionally held a Christmas dance for the stallholders with the dancehall being opened officially on Christmas Eve 1934. The owner Margaret McIver saw how successful the annual dances were and decided to make them a weekly event. This continued for many years before the ballroom evolved into venue for many memorable concerts.

The Barrowlands located in the East End of Glasgow has been known to hold concerts from bands such as ‘The Who’, ‘The Charlatans’, ‘U2’ and many more. Having a 1900 person capacity, the venue packs in its crowds to create an atmosphere that has become famous. Many a band have returned to the Barrowlands having enjoyed playing there so much.

When the Barrowlands re-opened as a music venue it had a new neon sign that is now well-known in Glasgow. In fact this sign is used in The Glasgow Caledonian Prospectus for the Entertainment and Events Course immediately catching my eye!

The venue has many more gigs coming up which can be checked out here!
